07/24/2008: "Devil Ray"

Underwater action photography is difficult - the subject move, the humans are limited by a lungfull of air and it is hard to organise nature to do the right thing. We spent two mornings snorkeling with Devil Rays at the Reef Islands anchorage - and this was the best we could do with Estelle and a Ray slicing away underwater.
One late afternoon a large black object was espied alongside Chaotic Harmony. 'Whale Shark' was the call and as Gavin was adjacent the snorkels so he grabbed a set and jumped overboard. Although he did not jump back immediately he looked like he might have. It was not a whale shark and took a few minutes to identify the 12m leviathan. Probably a fin whale, it circled Chaotic Harmony scooping up the ball of bait fish that had gathered there.
